transfer data 20gb to 120gb XBOX 360 hard drive

Hi,

My DS has had to purchase a larger HD for his XBOX 360 & we want to transfer all his games/music etc over to new HD. I have applied to MS for the free data transfer cable, but it still hasn't turned up yet.

I do have an Iomega 250 gb external hard-drive, does anyone know if this can be used for the task?

Thanks

  • I think the data transfer cable is the only way. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will pop along and say I'm wrong, but don't keep your hopes up.
  • Can anyone confirm?

This is where ms take the biscuit as far as im concerned(maybe they have a point), the transfer cable was free until some point last year where ms stopped giving them out and started asking for £10, reason they stopped giving them out was due to people calling ms saying they had bought an elite and wanted the cable but they were actually after a quick buck and sold the cable on ebay for £10 or whatever and ms got wind of it and started charging from some point last year. Im in a similar situation and i managed to borrow one of these which is basically a memory card which you use to transfer your stuff, you dont need to move demos over as you can just re download them but its the saves you need to move. The cable would move exerything from the 20GB to the 120GB hard drive in go but it costs £10,
  • Thanks for that, looks like I need to coff up another tenner.

PS. My DS tells me that until he transfers all the data across, he will be unable to log into his profile to play live using the new hard drive - does this sound right?

yes in theory, all he would need to do is recover his gamertag to the new console with the 120GB hard drive attached but his saves wont obviously be there but yes he can carry on as normal
  • For anyone interested.....

Phoned M$ for data transfer cable, paid £11.69 for cable inc delivery. They did say upto 10 days for delivery, actually arrived in 3.

The transfer was amazingly simple, just had to connect the cable & insert the disc which then did everything, took just over an hour.

Everything worked perfectly. Have now sold the cable on Ebay for a profit!!!

    HTH someone

When I upgraded from 20GB to 120GB I took the memory card approach someone mentioned earlier... very quick and simple to just copy off the profiles and saves that I wanted and then copy it to the new drive. The big advantage I found was that when I started looking at what demos and DLC I had downloaded to the 20GB I realised I had a lot of stuff that was just wasting space and I didn't want there anymore so I didn't re-download so my new 120GB had tonnes of space left and only had things I really wanted on it.
The cable is a rip off but like SnowWhiterThanWhite said, if you do get it you can always sell it on on eBay after you've used it.
