all im saying is this 'i have got it all working with my systems not a problem' where as you have said it cant be done there are a few people around who always jump on the horror bandwagon here and make out they know it all well guess what it isn't nesscarily the truth.
and tbh how many people are going to keep moving the os over more than 3/4 computers sorry i think you are just scarmonging because it suits your view as it stands.oh and for the record i have never had to phone up m$ for activation it has just worked.
I'm not interested in getting into a slagging match on this one but there are always more ways to skin a cat than one way.
otherwise i would consider myself narrow minded, i'm just telling how its happened with me if you don't belive me then fine carry on dishing out the advice. i hope your right when its other people money your giving away and not your own i thought this place was called mse!

    @Mikey

I'm pretty sure it only ever compares to the original hash (until explicitly reset by Microsoft if they're nice to you when you phone up) so once you've changed 'component X' it'll flag it doesn't match the original but if you then change that same component again you can do so freely as it'll still just count as one component mismatch vs the original hardware setup.

I'm not giving away anyone's money, just letting them make informed decisions about what they're allowed to do with the different licenses (as opposed to what's dodgy and 'might' work). and how the transferrability of a RETAIL license preserves its value vs OEM and could be exploited to save money as per my quite specific "how I got windows 7 for £15" example.

Thats what I regard as good MSE sense :A

I think you're right with that. Never actually had to reset one yet though, but I've been microsoft are ok about it.

OEM is fine for 99% of home users who have built a pc themselves or want to upgrade from XP etc.

A lot of mountains being made out of molehills on here!

Support can be had on pc forums or even MSE forum.

Why on earth would you waste the extra money on RETAIL?!!!

cuz they don't want to be throwing it down the drain with OEM, why pay £50 to Microsoft every time you build a new PC or upgrade too much when £60 will do you for at least the life of the OS and you'll very likely get more than half of that back selling it on on ebay when you're done -just look what old copies of vista and XP are still going for :)

reading a thread before posting will help you not completly miss the point... and line Microsoft's pockets any more than absolutely necessary :T

EDIT: actually on second thoughts the more fools there are sinking their cash in 'die with the machine' OEM copies the higher the resale price I'll get for my RETAIL copies due to lower supply vs demand.... Micro$oft will be v happy with the extra revenue too, go knock yourself out with those OEM editions :)

Quite clearly its you and people like you who don't know what they're doing with windows installs and activations that even consider OEM.

hhmmm strange i had version of xp pro oem running of 3 diff machines now all new self build so i really must not no know what i'm doing really glad you told me that i wondered what i was doing wrong. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Same here, I always use oem versions, if it fails to activate I phone Microsoft and say I have had my PC repaired at a shop and I do not know what they have done to it but it cost a lot of money and now it wont activate.
Microsoft will always activate it over the phone.

Go and make some coffee mate

I've used OEM's for years, upgraded my pcs multiple times, had to call Microsoft several times and they NEVER had an issue with my OEM licence and upgrading!

I think you'll find there are millions upon millions of OEM users with similar stories :rotfl::T
