Ok, I'll try and keep this as short as possible.
We are in Scotland. We offered the fixed price on a house (subject Home Report) in November. The offer was accepted. Unfortunately an issue did arise in the Home Report which, to cut a long story short, would cost around £2k to fix. We reduced our original offer by £2k but this was rejected and we couldn't agree a deal. I thought the deal was dead.
Fast forward a few months, and I received an email from the estate agent last week asking if we were still interested in said property. My response was 'possibly'.
On Friday (12/2/10), I recieved another email from the estate agent which was a forward of the owners email. Basically, the owners made a proposal for the deal to go through at the original price offered (due to matrimonial issues) but would rebate me with a personal cheque for £1k. I sent an email response on Sunday evening (14/2/10) saying that we would accept the proposal and that I would pop into the EA office today (Monday 15/2/10) to discuss how best to proceed.
So I visited to EA today to be told that two more buyers viewed the house on Saturday (13/2/10) and this morning, received a 'note of interest' from one of them. The owners are now wanting to set a closing date of Wed or Thu this week for offers.
Where do I stand on this issue? Does the email proposal and my response have any kind of weight from a legal point of view? I have been messed about from day one by these particular owners and I'm fed up with this house to be honest but my partner is very keen on it so I'm hanging in there for her sake.
Input very much appreciated.
Cheers.

They turned down your offer THREE MONTHS AGO and now suddenly they are juggling three separate offers around the price you offered back in November? You are being played and not terribly well either in my opinion. If the house really was worth what they thought they wanted for it, it would have sold by now. If I were wanting to be really cruel I'd sit tight, wait for the other "buyers" to drop out and then go back in with an offer £1K lower0
