Can the cheque be saved?

I have recently sent a cheque to my nephew for his 18th, as he had no idea what he wanted and his mother said send him cash. He is saving for a holiday so will presumably put it to that. Yes, I could have set up a payment via online banking, but seems a lot of messing, when I had to send the card anyway.
Maybe we go back to postal orders?
You are right as, this will definitely going to affect grand parents whoa are staying at some places from where it is tough to access, also some new techniques really dont seems to be worth for them.
Thanks0 -
The only thing I pay by cheque with is the milkman and school stuff. I could easily give him cash though.
I gave the grandparents my kids bank account details so they can transfer cash if they wish to at birthdays and christmas.
Local council is setting up online payment for school dinners and i hope they will arrange the same for trips etc.
Tradesmen have been using a phone for payment or giving the bill with their paypal payment address at the bottom or bacs details.
If anyone ever wants to give us a cheque we teach them how to do a bacs. Its a 25 mile round trip to a bank from our house anyway so saves a trip to the bank which is lovely.0 -

I can see a few options for people wanting to gift money.
Birthdays are the same time every year so they could use the internet, phone or go in to the bank to set up a standing order if they know that they always give money as a gift.
One off payments can also be done with all 3 methods.
The great grandparents in my family have all taken on one of the above methods without a problem.
Tescos sell everything a child could want. Relatives could get a gift card with their weekly shop and post it on. I saw in clinton cards they sell gift cards for everywhere - even ebay!0 -

Yes so do I cheques for dinners/trips/books etc
Also for milkman and to pay tradesmen who definiteley do not have a card reader; they laughed when I asked them so in future wil have to get a lot of cash ready!!
Is the rest of Europe getting rid of cheques too? Think this is just to save money for banks. Think it will increase fraud as more people will have to use online payment etc0 -

It may increase online fraud, but it'll certainly decrease cheque fraud.
We could go round in circles here: whatever system we use, fraudsters will always find a way.0 -
My parents had a plumber round today to do some work. They offered to write him a cheque, which he refused. He said he'd get the terminal from the car. We were a little unsure what he meant, but he came in with a portable chip and pin machine. He said that even after the initial purchase cost, it was cheaper to take cards instead of cheques as he doesn't need to visit the bank and pay their fees plus he doesn't get any bounced cheque.
His business is just a one man band as he's self employed. Just goes to show that there are alternative to cheques, but people just need to be a little more open with what they'll accept.0
