gear box leaking.. arghh help!!!

I thought I had a simple oil leak.. but no.. it's the gear box leaking and apparently it's an expensive job to get done

Anyone here have a clue about gear boxes leaking??? The garage whom I took the car to to get checked rekon that's the problem. It's not leaking very much btw, but I wanna get it put right.

May be easier just to fit a secondhand box. What sort of car is it?
    Can I help?
  • im following on from your post as mine sort of fits and ive searched though previous ones and cant find anything.

I had a leak ..and couldnt for the life of me sort out where it was coming from and it left a few blobs on the road outside the house ..embarressing as everyone commented .... (we live in a cul de sac) ..... thankfully the next door neighbour had a real old banger that leaked oil terribly, that he parked in the same spot so i used to blame him.

Ive had the leak repaired, but i want to remove the oil from the road as it looks so fresh people still assume my car is leaking but now it isnt. (neighbour isnt concerned now he has a new car, even tho majority of the oil is off his car, its outside my house)

how do i remove oil from the road ? ? ? can anyone help.

sorry op for jumping in on your post ..hope you get it sorted.

It's a Ford Puma. I don't fancy a second hand gearbox. There's no garuntee that another gearbox hasn't been abused and I end up worse off.

Seems a gearbox leak isn't anything to worry about particularly, but I'd rather not have a leak all the same.

As for getting oil off the road or drive. There is a commercial product called Genie. Petrol stations use it. Not sure if it can be bought by the public tho'

Best thing is cat litter! You can get a big bag for a pound or so and even the car magazines rate it higher than specialist products.

Try your local motor factors for a tube of Wynn's gearbox stop leak, we used to sell it where i worked.
Can't guarantee it will work but a cheaper option to try.

Depends on where it's leaking oil from. If it's just a cover plate then a new gasket and a bit of labour and it's sorted. If it's a shaft seal then fixing it is advised. Puma is a Fiesta, so the gearboxes won't be rare unless the ratios were special.

  • I'll check out the prices of the stop leak at the local motor shops.

The garage didn't say where it was leaking from. The mechanic wasn't up on gearboxes.

It's only a small leak, and I've only noticed oil on the drive 3 times over the last few months. It's been the smallest amount too. I think the problem with working on gearboxes, is the labour charged for taking them apart.

You don't need an extensive knowledge of gearboxes to see where a leak is coming from. Jet wash the gearbox and then monitor where the leak is coming from.

  • Ok, I'll give that ago.

I think the probs with the mechanic was, his garage didn't work on gearboxes, so he wasn't going to go into too much detail, as he wouldn't be getting any cash out of it.

Exactly, there's no substitute for some DIYfault finding. Tracing oil leaks is fairly simple if you start with a clean engine/gbox. With a grimey engine tracing a leak can be time consuming.

Places to look are gasket seals on any cover plates and then shaft seals where the drive shafts come out.
