Do you think eMusic have conned me?

I joined eMusic for a free trial membership a few months ago. After looking around the site, I could not find enough tracks on there that made me want to stay, so I cancelled my membership before the trial period ran out. Done and dusted.

Then a couple of months afterwards, I received an email that are allowed me to rejoin and download 75 free tracks. I want to paste the image of the email but as a new member I am not allowed - is there any way around this?

Anyway, I thought - hey ho, I'll give them another chance, see if there are even 75 tracks worth downloading. There was barely that many I wanted, so again I cancelled my membership.

Then last week I check my credit card bill and see they have charged me £10! I contact eMusic to find out why and they state I rejoined. I said I didn't, it was just a free trial, and I cancelled with plenty of time left to go. They said no, the terms and conditions state I will be charged for my subscription.

So if you look really really closely at the email, you can see tiny writing stating I will be charged. However, they never told me how much, there was never a screen stating I was going to be charged for rejoining, nothing. So do you guys think I have been ripped off? Is there anything I could do?

And WHAT WOULD :money:do?!?!?!?!

So you knew you would be charged and knew they were unlikely to have anything you wanted to buy. But still you returned. From your description it was not a free trial - there was an introductory offer of some free tracks in addition to the subscription.

I think it is you who is trying to rip them off.

    I don't think this sentence:
"Get up to 45 additional music credits free with your first month’s paid subscription."
is ambiguous. It's on the front page. I presume a similar stipulation was on your invite.
  • Then last week I check my credit card bill and see they have charged me £10!
    Free Trial is Free.

But what amazes me is that these thugs somehow got hold of your Credit Card? If it is fraud, get the police.

    If not, TUFF

I have been an emusic customer. The emails I have received since leaving have all invited me to rejoin but stated that I would be charged from the outset. ie, there were free tracks offered but no free trial period.

    From my latest email offer:
Offer available to prior eMusic customers only. Your credit card will be charged if you agree to this offer. Music offer and eMusic's prices are subject to change without notice and are subject to eMusic's terms of use.

    No, is my answer
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler
  • Wow, I didn't realise how harsh the responses would be - you can disagree without the rude tone!

My issue was that the message stating I would be charged was in tiny greyed-out writing. There was never a screen that popped up stating "You will be charged £10 per month for this subscription", which I feel is necessary. They also didn't ask for my credit card details, just kept them from last time I was a member.

I have clearly stated I didn't know I would be charged. And I thought it was unlikely they'd have anything I wanted, but thought I'd give them the chance to prove me wrong.

    It's simple.
You didn't read what you were signing up for.
    You weren't conned.

Pretty much what I was thinking! When Pmduk wrote they got the same email and knew exactly what would happen without struggeling to locate it thats when it really became a case of not reading what your letting yourself in for.
  • emusic would be great - if it was iTunes. They simply don't have enough known music con the site to make it work - i signed up with the groupon deal recently & struggle to find anything I like that is on their site. Some recent searches: Ellie Goulding, OMD, Keane, The Clash, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Hurts, the list goes on..

Not exactly limited to one genre, I managed to find Temper Trap, Bonobo & a trance vocal comp to download along with The xx album. But it was tough to find anything I liked which means you might end up downloading something you wouldn't normally bother with cos it's all they have - which is pointless!

I suspect this site will disappear sooner than later - there must be a reason why they aren't getting any decent artists on their site. They're a business - having a million obscure bands/artists on a site is no way to make enough money to continue to trade.
