I'm a bit addicted to picnicware (and tupperware, it's something about the plastic and the bright colours!). I've got a thermal backpack style picnic set (with a flap that opens out with all the crockery and cutlery. I've also got a big old fashioned style wicker picnic basket. My mum got a M&S christmas hamper one year and it came in this basket and as a graduation present for me my mum lined the basket in gingham, made little elasticated straps to hold the cups and plates, made little bags to put the cutlery and corkscrew in and made a bit cloth to spread it out on.

Full of food it weighs a ton but I adore it and it really looks the part, especially at outdoor concerts. I'm often to be seen lugging it around in summer! I know the backpack is more practical but there's something about a hamper that just makes a picnic more of an event!

Love the flasks in your hamper Lillibet. I have one of the thermal ruck-sack ones, though I find you can't fit much in them either and we take a seperate cool-box for food:D
Mine was a Xmas pressie from DH few years ago, though the shop assistant tried her best to talk him out of getting me it cos she said I wouldn't like it cos it was for the house  .

I brought one for 6.99 from Morrisons a couple of months ago. No where near as fancy as yours Lillibet. :D

I might give it a Makeover...

    :hello:
    Oooh! Veerry nice!

I thought I was the only one in the world with a picnic hamper fetish!
Mine (a wicker bakers basket in green with complete set of crockery/cutlery and champagne flutes for 4 - mini chopping board, salt'n'pepper shakers, corkscrew AND matching cloth and napkins! :D ) was lugged over from LA with great effort, discomfort and to much amusement of my travelling companions! I got it for the princely sum of £50 (at then rate of exchange) but it was worth it! Have never seen anything like it (with all bits!) and the champagne flutes make it more of an occasion (although I have OJ in mine!)
Bit heavy when full .... but I have a little trolley that can use if going far from car.

We are going picnicking tomorrow and sunday, hope to be using it!! :p

We will have samosas, pakoras (if can get my act together in morning) with mint chutney, some kind of pasta salad - probably smoked salmon (BOGOF in freezer, new potato salad, green mixed salad and for dessert something with raspberries (from garden) washed down by OJ/lemonade or water

so what is in your picnics then?

Picninc hampers are worth quite a lot of money if they're complete. A lot of them have pieces missing or that have been replaced from a different set. My dad bought one from a car boot sale but it doesn't have all the right crockery in it. It's not as nice as Lillibet's, looks like it was a cheaper hamper in the first place as well as having had stuff replaced. It goes with the P4 Rover though for really picnicing in style!
  • Sorry I'm late to this tread (Been moving home) but I have just unpacked my stash of picnic Hampers ( I know I know) I have the blue and grey version of the OP's set and have just looked inside it is still in its original cellophane wrapping, never ever had a buttie in it, the plates however have the ubiquitious "knife and fork" pattern from the early seventies (I can remember that stuff on the formica of the day) It is made by "Brexton" BTW.
I also have an older "Sirram" that is nice with cream tins and little glass salt and pepper pots and proper plates and cups and saucers, this one apparaently was made to fit the boot of expensive cars of the era - Dunno though.

The third is made by "Isovac" and the cups and plates are in a hard blue plastic and the milk jars etc have a similar cream coloured tops, it does have 3 original vacuum flasks though but overall it is tatty.

The Sirram one does have happy memories of when I was courting (or troth plighting - it was a loooooonnnnnnng time ago) when we used it to eat salmon butties and drink Bucks Fizz in Matlock Bath (See us Midlanders do know how to live) Should I hang on to them or get rid????
The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...
  • Wow that hamper is so cool, I am jealous and I want it!!
Not so much money saving now as I go off on a quest to find something similar!!
