OS Picnic hamper : when it's so retro it's modern!

Cyber chatting with a couple of friends I mentioned that we are off on a picnic tomorrow & gave my menu which they both said was far superior to their ready-made sarnies & packet of crisps picnics (:eek:), I said that you need a retro picnic hamper to go with my food. I inherited it from my grandparents, circa. 1950's & it's totally impratical but we love picnincing from it & the conversations it causes with other picnic-ers!
Here is a photo, sorry it has a very scruffy hubby & disgrunted Spud in it too!

My 2 non-OS friends thought it was so retro it was a new trend & are both bidding on ebay for their own!!

Hi Lillibet
That takes me back - my mum and dad had the exact same hamper but in blue. Many happy picnics and camping holidays were had with that set (driftinh off into a daydream...).
We were given a hamper from John Lewis as a gift. We've made use of it but it's quite bulky - I wonder if my Mum still has the old hamper?

That looks lovely, I've always wanted one of those

They had something similar on This Morning on Thursday and it cost a fortune.
Keep an eye out in charity shops the ones round here had some recently about £10 to £15.

Wow I love those plates. I have a big wicker one that I got on sale a few years back from matalan, ended up getting it all for £2.50 should have been £30 but because its so big its neither use nor ornement :rolleyes: I would much prefer a little compact one like that :jWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

yep they go for a stash on ebay- been looking for my own for a while now

edit here it is- no way as nice as yours lillibet
:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Trying to keep you motivated, can I point out that it's actually 12 weeks cigarettes!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
Well that sort of thing has helped me, even when I've not gone on to buy it!!;)You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Moggins-That is devine!!
Bootsales are very good for these kind of things, especially in the winter months when nobody wants a picnic basket;)
OH picked one up last year from a bootsale and was in a rucksack all brand new. Plates, glasses, cutlery, napkins, salt/pepper pots etc and bought for £2:eek: It also has bottle holders on each side for wine:D

The downsides of mine are ;
it's heavy (but that's what Hubby is for:D)
the crockery is china & I'm terrified of breaking it:rolleyes:
there isn't much space in there for food (so we eat less, money saving & old style:D)
it isn't thermal (so I pack as much as I can frozen & allow it to defrost:cool:)
The upsides are;
it's original (if not quite unique pretty damn near it for actually still being in use;))
it's real vintage, not a modern copy:p
everyone comments on it (it's amazing how many people remember one from their childhood etc, & I'll talk to anyone:eek:)
I love the pink matalan one but hubby thought it looked like a very girly sewing box & said no way would he be seen dead carrying it:rolleyes: & as much as I like the expensive ones I just can't see the point? I do think the modern thermal rucksac ones are the best all rounders but I'm going to be sticking with my vintage one, I toast my grandparents every time I use it:D (apparently they got it by saving up their green flag stamps!).
I just couldn't believe my very un-OS friends (well, one is a wanna-be OS'er but has never quite got the hang of it:rolleyes:) thought it was so fab that it was worth buying their own!:rotfl:
If anyone else happens to be visiting Charles Darwins' house in Kent tomorrow look out for a family of 3 with a very old picnic set & a circle of curious onlookers:D:rolleyes::rotfl:Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
