Credit cards - don't believe all the hype

Just tried to close my Barclaycard account as had no need of it and didn't want "too much" credit being available to me in the future potentially hindering mortgage applications etc. Got the old "we don't want to lose you" response resulting in an increase in cashback of 50% (to 1.5%) and 12 months' free card protection plan - as my last bill was less than £100 I don't even use the card that much so was surprised they were so keen to keep me - goes to show! WIll probably close another one now.

Barclaycard are very good like this. They've reduced my APR once already and am hoping for another treat when I threaten to leave again six months down the line ;)

  • Andrew, sorry if I'm being a bit dim here but which hype shouldn't we believe?

Did you close it online or on the phone?

I have a Barclaycard Cashback card which I no longer use. It used to be a Morgan Stanley which was excellent, but since Barclaycard have taken over and the customer service centre has been outsourced abroad, I haven't used it and keep meaning to close it.

I'm assuming the hype surrounding credit card companies reducing credit limits, closing non-profitable customers credit cards etc.
