Help please!Cheapest eco/VOC free paint+working out the volume + cheap carpet

Hi,

My brother and new family are moving in at the weekend and we want to paint the place this week with eco paint- the stuff that doesn't have the horrible VOC's in it, especially as they have a 6 month year old child.

I have done some reserach on finding out about it but was wondering if anyone had more knowledge and have looked and checked which is the cheapest and safest way to buy this paint. White is fine!!

There is about 66 square meters of wall in the bungalow times 2 coats = errrmmm at lot of liters??? Perhaps if some one has a link to work out how much paint you need to get that could be good!!

Also, anyone know where to get cheap, as eco as possible, quite hard wearing contract type carpet i.e. like rented flats in oatmeal to go through out the place that would be good too as we don't have time to faff about with colours etc sadly plus should be cheaper/ easier to whach it down...

If anyone can advise that would be much apreicated.
Thanks

20 - 25 litres should do you. Try a local independent carpet shop. They normally have remnants / end of lines and are usually much cheaper than the national carpet stores.

    - the stuff that doesn't have the horrible VOC's in it,
Far too much nonsense spouted about this subject by people with a vested interest. The trouble is too many folks actually believe it - more of the great global warming scam!!. When paint is dry it doesn't matter how much VOC content there is when its wet. Just buy standard stuff off the shelf - it all complies with current regs anyway.

    Cheers

  • Hi,

You will not find recycled carpets anywhere, to be fair. Your best bet for 'cheap as possible carpets' would be to find a local independent carpet warehouse and buy a load of remnants!

Thanks for all your comments everyone!!

Regards looking for eco/ non VOC paint:

"many modern paints these ingredients are made using toxic chemicals that are harmful to both the environment and human health. Cadmium, lead and chromium are frequently used in pigments; and petrochemicals, solvents, benzene, formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used in binders and carriers. Toxic, environmentally harmful, chemicals are also used in modern paints as preservatives, stabilisers, thickeners and driers. VOCs are organic (carbon based) chemical compounds that evaporate easily in the atmosphere, and are known to be a major contributor to global climate change. Many of them are highly toxic and linked with numerous health problems such as respiratory disease, asthma, dizziness, headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin disorders, eye irritation, liver and kidney damage and even cancer. Modern chemical paints continue to emit VOCs many years after their application.
Increasing concerns about the impact of chemical paints on health and the environment have led to a growing market in non-toxic paints. Environmental regulations have forced conventional paint companies to significantly reduce their VOC content, and most of the large paint companies now offer one or more varieties of non-toxic paints. However, many of these still contain VOC solvents, chemical pigments and fungicides."

My comment is that they used to advertise smoking with it's health benefits...!
