Are they worth it?
Basically my boiler (Ravenheat LS 80) is not sparking, pumps etc seem to be fine. Should I go for a BG/Npower repair for around £170 or should I try a local company?
Like the idea of a MAX fee with BG/Npower rather than risking someone I've never used before with no idea on fee (seen too many episodes of Rogue Traders!).

I have just had a one-off boiler repair with British Gas (£192). They stated that there were no exclusions and the work would be guaranteed for one year. My boiler is only guaranteed for 28 days and there are exclusions. They admit I was misled but are not able to offer me a refund. Be very careful, and ask lots of questions. I would never trust BG again.0

No more than I would expect from BG.
You could always ask a local for a quote to repair. You may find one that will do it, but more likely you will get charged a call out fee, then given a price to fix if it is not simple and/or needs parts.0
