Chalet extension

Hi

I am looking at buying a chalet style house which has 2 bedrooms upstairs and 1 downstairs.

The question is how much would an upstairs extention cost?
I would have thought this would have been cheaper than a standard extension as there are not foundations to dig etc.

This would add another bedroom and a ensuite, a rough idea would be great. :)

not sure if planning would allow double dormers on a house - also for cost and disruption, if would cheaper and easier to build at ground floor level, than going into roof space

  • Sorry if I did not make this clear, a chalet style house has a sloping roof at the side and it is common practice to square it off to create extra space up stairs, if you need any further info then please let me know.

a chalet style house, already has rooms in the roof space, otherwise it would just be a bungalow, with a very high pointy roof

the squaring off of the roof, is called a dormer window - so if you have a chalet, with rooms in the roof already, you will already have one set of dormers in place - if you want to go into the loft space to create another room, then your only option is to have roof lights, or another set of dormer windows. if you dont put in dormers, then you will have restricted headroom

from the way you are describing your chalet, it is a normal two storey house, with a single storey side extension, that has a catslide roof, and you want to extend into this side extension?

or perhaps, you still arent making yourself clear

Yes, thats the best way to discribe it, a full lenth dormer to make the upstairs bigger.

An idea on cost is what I what, I live in the Bromley area.

I am also looking at doing a kitchen extension, with a sloping roof, about 1.5 x 4M, 6m2.

A rough guilde would be great.

it would be hard to quantify a price for the roof extension, as first you would have to know the type of footings already being used at ground level, and also the construction of the roof you plan to extend into

however, why arent you considering a full two storey side extension, rather than fiddling around with limited roof space?

as for the ground floor extension - 1.5m wide? will you really gain that much space, for all the inconvenience and costs involved? would this be a standalone kitchen, or are you looking to remove the adjoining wall, and knock right through from the existing house? if its a standalone room, then build costs will be min of £10k, if knocking through, there is no way i could know costs involved, due to variances in supports required
