Glasses for 18 month old?

My daughters were a bit older. DD who is now 18 and no longer wears glasses had hers age 3. DD, now 16, had hers between 2-3 and now wears contacts.
As another poster said once they realise how well they can see it becomes second nature to wear them. my youngest has always had her specs by the bed and its the first thing she puts on.
oh and definitely get a spare pair as you will probably need them.2013

My cousin had them from 8 months old.. his vision was horrendously awful.. he had cardboard tubes on his arms for a few weeks until he got used to them being on his face.. he is 18 now and hate wearing them more now than he did as a baby lol.. sadly for him, he is one of the few who cannot have contacts.
My OH needed glasses from quite a young age but his vigilant parents didn't notice until he was 10 and couldn't see one of those huge billboards... his are about the same 'script as your son.. batman, we call him!!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
When you say Doctors I assume he went to the hospital? Did he have any drops? Did they look at his eye through anything? Did they put any lenses infront of his eyes?
DD started wearing her glases just after she turned 2. Her perscription is +3.75 & +4.5, does it have any other numbers after it? DD's is +0.5 & 180, this helps with the squint. We got some great glasses from Asda which wrap right around her ears (& they come in very small sizes) & the frames are very rubbery so can stand a lot of messing with. As people have said if it means they can see they will take to them right away.
We only have one pair & she has managed to look after them well. We also bought her a pair of sunglasses which we had to pay for.

Thanks Kitkat and johnswife, i am not dreading it quite as much now, !
Kitkat, did you find you had to get more than one pair, and do you mind me asking if they cost alot? I know we can get one basic pair free, but pretty sure we will need a spare pair....0 -
My daughter started wearing glesses at 2 years old she is now 33 yo I got worried when I noticed she had a slight squint I took her to the Doc's and he agreed made an appt at the hospital and over the years she wore patches over one or the other eye she had an operation I think she was 4ish.
From starting with the glasses we would go to the hospital every few months for check ups I remember she would pick a Mr Men book at the newsagents near the hospital each time we went needless to say she got all of them :j
She never had any problems wearing them children take to these things so naturally at one point she had what at the time they called excecutive lenses which were half and half vision top and bottom a bit like bifocals and it didn't bother her at all I remember the receptionist saying adults have more problems with this type of glasses than children do.
She now just wears glasses to drive and she stopped wearing glasses full time about 10 _11 yo and the squint had gone so don't worry he will be fine.0 -
pigpen - LOL! my Oh has very bad eyesight and had to wear nhs bottle glasses until he was 16 and got contacts don't think he has quite got over it as he refuses to wear his glasses out of the house still (even though they are much nicer now!!)
Jackomdj, it was the hospital optometry sp? dept, but they didn't use any drops or lenses, the doctor had one of those jelly monster pencil topper things that she waved around at him for a bit and showed him some white on black pictures, then decided that glasses were needed - no other numbers just 4.5 sph distance for each eye.
The asda glasses sound perfect, will have to see if we can get them nearby.0 -
I only got one pair to start with, there are lots of choice of the free NHS glasses & they are quite nice not like the ones years ago either pink or blue! so I've never paid for a pair apart from my son broke his on a sat afternoon & we were due to go on holiday the next day my optitions were closed so I walked around town, specsavers were not very helpful but I went in an independant optitions & they let me buy a pair of frames & transfered the lenses from his existing glasses think they charged me about £15 and that was how I acquired a spare pair, his perscription changed recently it increased & I was worried that his sight had got worse the dr at the hospital said they have increased it because of his turn as the glasses where not always correcting this, he seems fine with the new ones but the other day I realised he was wearing the old ones as they are the same frames!!
I now have taken a copy of his current perscription so if I am ever in the situation where I need some made up quickly like before I can, you live & learn. lol0 -
Have just PM'd you a link to a photo of DD in her glasses, side on to show how they loop around her ear.0

Not a mum or dad, but i've worn glasses since I was very young.
You may find it's worth going to a local independent opticians (definitely not specsaves, vision express etc) to get his eyes checked to confirm the prescription. It's not a lot different to mine at the moment and i'm blind as a bat without mine on so I expect you would have noticed if he needed such strong glasses by now. The price shouldn't be much different to going to a chain opticians but the service you receive will be better and the relationship you build up with your optician will be very valuable as your son gets older and needs new glasses/prescriptions/wants to try out contact lenses (probably a few years off yet :rotfl: ) etc. I used to go to specsavers but recently changed to a local optician who spent more time checking my eyes and found something (in 5 minutes) that specsavers had missed (repeatedly over 6 yrs!!) which could have left me nearly blind in a few years.
As for your son breaking them, your opticians should have a repair serviceIf not it's easy to replace for a small fee providing the lenses aren't damaged
The frames are pretty strong though so should survive a lot of accidents. The most common problem I had with mine when I was younger was an arm falling off, which could be replaced at the opticians the same day
As others say, do make sure you have a second pair. Once he's used to them you don't want to have to wait a week with no glasses while his pair gets replaced/repaired or are lost!! :eek:0 -
Hi, my DD got her 1st glasses the day before her 1st birthday, her glasses had rubbber ends on the arms that fitted around her ears, he will keep them on eventually!! but a went to a independant optician, who is fabulous, when they break or get damaged i just fone him up and he sorts them out for me. Another thing i do is to get a 2nd pair you do have to say that, the 1st pair is lost so you always have a spare pair!! my DD is nearly 6 now an unfortunately still wears hers, were hoping her eyes have got better when we go back in 4wks, good luck.Getting Organised IN 2010 :T Clutter-free bug!!!
