Does to me - some cylinder locks are in two halves, both act on the same cam in the centre. The key only goes about half way.

Right hand photo in Wiki link shows such a lock.

my door look cylinder is 2 halfs only held in with 1 screw anyway don't think fresian_cow is reading this no responses back so far.
the easiest way to deal with this is to remove the barrel and buy a replacement if it cant be removed after the following.
but if is a split barrel e.g. 2 halfs there is a lug in the middle which comes out when in locked position therefor leaving the inside with an opening to the back half of the barrel my bet with a paper clip or a small jewllery type screwdriver may have more luck.
as to the hammer and punch idea what you trying to do break into a transit van? all that will do is cause more damage!
