Collapse of the euro is 'inevitable'

The European single currency is facing an 'inevitable break-up' a leading French bank claimed yesterday.

The stark warning came as the euro slipped further on the currency markets and dire growth figures raised the prospect of a 'double-dip' recession in the embattled zone.

It's been inevitable ever since the mad scientists 'invented' the thing:eek:

can states actually opt out? isn't this now a bit like england opting out of sterling because they are fed up with shoring up the welsh economy?

A very good question. In theory, no. Like it was impossible for Britain to opt out of the Exchange Rate Mechanism. The impossible becomes possible when the political and economic costs of staying in (mass unemployment, bankruptcies, house repossessions) outweigh the benefits (political hubris).

i'd have thought you have to take the rough with the smooth. to me the longterm benefits of a single currency outweigh the problems. but then i'm anti-borders too (just an excuse to control free movement as far as i can see).

There is no way the euro is going to collapse, they might throw out the odd country which persistently fails to follow the rules but that is different to the euro collapsing

Yes, they should throw out all the countries that have breached the rules. That leaves them with... none.

Alternatively the European Central Bank should throw out all those who bent the rules before the current crisis, leaving... Germany. While they are at it they could rename the euro the deutschemark. Job done :rotfl:
  • euro is less likely to collapse then sterling imo
