I have had similar problems with them not closing the account! They seem to make it up as they go along with these and this stems from not being able to physically open and close these accounts and start from 'zero'.

How did you get on with your complaint Helz Belz?

I'd raise a formal complaint. You technically made a mistake, but I think it's not on how they waited all of those months to tell you. Had they closed the account in October like they should have then you'd have got a lot more interest elsewhere.

The most you stand to lose is some time and the cost of some recorded delivery letters.

Raise a formal complaint for what exactly. The OP screwed up, simples ! If people actually bothered to keep an eye on there finances they wouldn't screw up and then want compensating for their own C O C K U P !!

I have a bond maturing with them soon. I see their rates are terrible now, and the regular saver rate is now 2%. They arnt much good now. Time to vacate them i think.

This isn't the same as people who go over their limit because they haven't been looking at their balance, this is a small term and condition that people are likely to forget - and I'm not saying that means the OP can flout it, but rather it is unfair for the Halifax to just act like nothing's going wrong for a few months to keep his money for longer. We know their computer systems are advanced enough to pick this sort of thing up pretty much instantly, so Halifax are actually acting in bad faith.

You may note that the Ombudsman not only attempts to uphold the law but also "good business practices". This is not one of them.

In fact your post really doesn't make sense now that I think about it - even if I thought the OP deserved what happened I really wouldn't call missing that term and condition "not keeping an eye on their finances". Why those choice of words?
  • They've just pulled the same stunt with me, account closed for missed payment then I recieved a statement showing that I hadn't. On the phone they agreed it was a mistake, but 10 days later they still haven't put it right. I wouldn't be surpised if they are waiting for the next payment to be bounced back because they've closed the account.
