Open Office,Getting text right

Some time ago I typed a simple letter on this laptop using Open Office but when I came to print it by transferring it to a disc and taking it to the desktop which has a printer attached the text came out as gobbledegook. I can't remember what people said I had done wrong. Will someone remind me please? Is it all about HTML or is it more detailed than that?

    Hi
When you save the letter in OpenOffice you get lots of options which format you save as.
You should select 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)'.
If you choose a different format, the other computer might not recognize it. That's when it prints gobbledegook.

OpenOffice saves into ODF Text Document (.odt) format by default. When saving the document choose "Save As" and ensure that the Save As Type selection box and the bottom of the iwndow that opens shows Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) (as above) byclicking on the downward arrow to the right of the selection box.

Thank you. I just checked all the drop down menus and found the one you mentioned and did save it in that. I did not finish it in case I got it wrong. For a simple letter there must be something easier! In another menu it mentioned "export as HTML"
but then advised that this could not be done. I will never be Teckie enough:)

Even when you save as a doc file, it can sometimes not save it correctly (it warns you of this when saving the file). I tend to export as a PDF (portable document format) and read/print with adobe.

Sorry, Jake'sGran forgot to add that if you print from within OpenOffice then there really shouldn't be an issue. It is only going to be when transferring it to a computer that doesn't have OO loaded. As mumslave has suggested exporting the document as a .pdf file should get around that - always provided that the machine you're transferring onto has a .pdf reader, Adobe or freeware versions.

    Hi
I don't know how we ever used to manage without Google.:D
There's an explanation here how to change the default settings to
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP for the word processor
and Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP for the spreadsheet.
