Yes it is. It's the seeds you need not the chillis themselves.

As long as they've still got the seeds in (obviously), then yes, it's possible. I did this a couple of years ago using seeds from some dried chillis a work colleague gave me - as far as I remember, I soaked the seeds in water for an hour or so before planting them, and they grew pretty well. (I didn't actually get any chillis off them but I'm 99% certain that was because the garden I had then was very shady, rather than any problem with the plants themselves.)
Back after a very long break!

You can, but you won't know exactly what you are growing and the variety is unlikely to be best suited to our short season climate.

I've just germinated some chilli seeds I bought in 2004, and almost all of them have come up. Bearing in mind that I've had, say, 5 years of plants out of the 50 or so seeds in that packet (don't sow the same ones every year) the £1.50 it cost seems reasonable. Working like that, I can have 6 very different varieties of chilli for about 90p a year. action-smiley-068.gif

Seems good value to me.....and of course there is the option to save your own seed too! nature-smiley-009.gif
  • i bought a big bag in a little thai supermarket for 80p... i think there's 100g worth and there are thousands of the little !!!!!!s!! i was sick of paying 50p or even more for a couple of fresh ones from the supermarkets. the reason i'm asking is because i'm starting a gardening club at school and thought chillis might be a nice, easy thing to grow. i might give them a go and if they don't grow, they don't grow! we're going to be growing lots of other things, too, so i don't think there'll be mass disappointment if they don't "flower"....
