a washing machine is classed as a luxury item, they wouldn't give you a crisis loan as they will say you can go the laundrette!

Is there anywhere you can hire a washing machine from? Near to me a repair shop hires them out to students etc.
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.

Freecycle would also be a good option for a free washing machine.

A washing machine is not necessarily a luxury item for someone that has care needs. However, I doubt it would qualify for a CL.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • A washing machine can be awarded under a Crisis Loan, but it depends on the circumstances of the claim.

Under a budgeting loan but not a crisis loan.

Crisis Loans can be awarded for washing machines. It can be awarded if there's a serious risk to the applicants health or safety i.e. the applicant has a physical or mental incapacity which prevents handwashing.

I've seen them awarded to people with Parkinsons, MS, cancer, schizophrenia, severe depression etc.

Academic argument, really. If the OP's at their limit for budgeting loans, they're at their limit for crisis loans too.

OP ... go ahead and apply if you wish ... you'll be refused. But on your application, tell them that you wish the application considered for a Community Care Grant in the event they turn your crisis loan application down. They might be able to award you a CCG instead, but only if you & your family are facing exceptional pressures (family illness, for example).

Definitely try Freecycle and Gumtree. Have you got a British Heart Foundation shop near you? Larger branches sell reconditioned electrical items for next to nothing and they will deliver (and collect if you want to donate). Some councils also have lists of other charitable organisations which collect and distribute furniture and sometimes electricals to people on a low income or benefits.

Hardly - the limit for o/s BL debt is £348 at the moment - £812 for a family.

Max Social Fund debt is £1500 so its hardly a given that having an outstanding budgeting loan would prohibit a crisis loan.

As for the second suggestion - a CCG should be considered if appropriate without the applicant specifying...

As for getting a washing machine on a crisis loan - generally it would be severe health or mobility restrictions or vast amounts of laundry which would permit an award (single parent with say 5 or 6 children for example - or a condition that creates huge amounts of washing up - serious bowel conditions with incontinance perhaps).

Well, I've seen C/L's awarded in such circumstances when health conditions permit. And I've also seen busy SFO's routinely ignore the need for CCG's to be considered, hence the suggestion. I'm aware of SF debt limits too and am familiar with the widespread blanket refusals once those limits are reached, irrespective of the circumstances presented. It's why so many SF decisions are overturned on review.

I can only add those things from my own experience in the hope it might help someone, somewhere.
