Ok, Last week at college i noticed something wrong with the pc, without looking into this i stick my USB memory stick into the drive. But forgetting the PC was virused to hell having big red X in the icon tray displaying fake messages. so this was on the wednesday i get home everything runs fine no problems comes friday night. I come in mess about on pc next thing a fake version of microsoft secuirty centre opens and a fake lookalike of internet security opens starts scanning etc and with the big red X displaying same as college. background turns green "your system is infected" along them lines. So i try to fix but everytime i plugged the ethernet cable in i get computer shutdown auto just turns off. So in the end i format took enough times for it to run fine without any problems.

i searched college comp for 41.exe 4.exe i think these were part of the virus and i had these on my comp.

So now the problem is:

My second computer i turned on today seems to have messed up abit not with the above included. My computer seems to think my ethernet card is a "national semiconductor DP83815-Based PCI fast ethernet adapter" i have never heard of this but the fact is on the actual card it displays in capitals NETGEAR so it is a netgear ethernet card. with a mac address of FF-FF-FF-FF-FFF-FFF which is no would never exist

So has anyone any idea on how this seems reinstalled as a new card.

p.s apologies for the lack of punctuation etc not my best thing atm :(

First off - I'd inform the techies at the college about the virus outbreak so they can try & clean the mess up on the college PCs to stop further infections

As for the ethernet card, it could be picking up the name of the chipset. Stick the model number (should be printed on the card somewhere) of the card into the netgear support site and get the correct drivers.

edit - its possible that it could be picking up an integrated LAN card on the motherboard (if the MB has one inbuilt)
