how do you make an advert/pop up disappear without clicking on it??

just to clarify - when a pop up turns up saying it will scan your pc for infected files and when you click the 'X' (assuming you are going to close it) it doesn't - it starts to scan!!!!!!!!!!!

is it ctrl alt????????to close it without clicking on it????

i hope that made sense!:o

thanks for any helpxxxx

Are you sure it's actually scanning your pc?

A lot of these pop up ads say they are scanning your pc but are just running an advert really to get you to buy.

Yes Ctrl-Alt-Delete, open task manager, and end task for internet explorer (or whatever). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyVuA6YvAF4
  • Sure you're clicking the right X?

I had one of these popups today. It opens a new browser window, and in that browser window (and in a bit of white space) is an imitation of another window. The X of that imitation window is obviously fake and won't work.

EDIT: Much like Norbertsmum's current avatar :p
  • hi,

it starts to 'scan'- i think???when you click the 'X' (to close the pop up)

my key board has two 'deletes' one is the arrow, the other is a key that has 'delete' written..............which do i use??

    thanks!X
it is ctrl alt 'delete' or ctrl alt arrow key that deletes??
  • The arrow is a backspace key.

Much simpler, right click the clock at the bottom right and choose "(Start) Task Manager".

Its the one with Delete written on it.

A quicker alternative is Alt and F4. It immediately closes the browser. Try it now :)

I've seen one that brought up what looked very like the standard Windows 'I'm installing something' dialog box when you clicked the X. I presumed it really was installing something, so I pulled the plug in a panic.

I can well believe there are still popups out there that trigger a process when you think you're closing them.
