PC Dying?

The last couple of weeks my pc has been crashing with increasing frequency. i have been doing a variety of things and suddenly i get a blue screen of print for about half a second ( the blue screen of death? ) full of print. the only things i have been able to see is

your pc has encountered a problem, check recently installed hardware ( i havent installed anything new since i put in new RAM about 6 months ago ) and its performing a memory dump.

it then shuts down, going into check disc mode then restarts. its come up with errors for avg or firefox or another couple of programs in bad sectors but nothing seems to repeat. i have rebooted into safe mode and run avg and spybot s & d but nothing comes up.

tonight its happened 4 times ! arrrrggggghhhhh!

any ideas what is happening? is my whole pc dying or the hard drive or will a reinstall of XP work?

thanks

How many RAM blocks did you put in..? if you have two in there try taking one out and see if it runs ok, if it crashes still put it back in and take the other one out.
  • "" check recently installed hardware ""

    - standard MS ' catch all ' warning

    "" memory dump ""

    - could be [ physical ] memory bars, but unlikely after 26 weeks
    - more probable is allocation, something you have changed has stolen a previously reserves memory space

    "" check disc mode ""

    - is either your HDD failing, or,more likely whatever was being written to your HDD at exactly [ remember most HDD have a large cache ] the crash point causes chkdsk.exe to run in DOS

"" is my whole pc dying or the hard drive or will a reinstall of XP work ""

    - no
    - unlikely
    - almost (99%) certainly

It sounds like virii, unplug your ethernet cable, boot up, crtl-alt-del then performance tab, leave alone for 10 mins, but watch the performance, what's the CPU load in the performance window and what happens ?

Have you changed your BIOS settings, or sound, video in the last weeks, they tend to reserve memory allocations, as do ' hard / soft updates from Microsoft ?

the load varies between 4 - 12% with jumps up to around 25ish every few seconds.

I havent changed any settings but have allowed the normal ms updates.

tonight so far, it hasnt crashed at all but now its also getting a pop up saying my d: drive is full. I assume thats my systems folders/files but I cant find the check box to let me see the files in explore view. aarrrgghghhh!

1, check the hard drive, forget chkdsk, download hirens boot cd (freeware) and burn a copy, boot from the cd, andrun HDD Regenerator 1.71, this will check the hdd completely and repair any bad sector.

    2. download malwarebytes, install update and run a quick scan click fix for anything found www.malwarebytes.org

Your D: drive should be the partition where you system restore image is kept, a back up image which you would use to take it back to FACTORY bought.
can be used to store files you have downloaded depending on how big they made it.

I uploaded my copy, exactly the same file i downloaded

  • It could be a number of issues ranging from device conflicts (IRQ conflicts) to bad RAM or even a weak PSU or possibly an overheating CPU. Check the CPU temperature in the BIOS or in Windows (using speedfan). This will also tell you the PSU voltages for all 3.3v, 5v and 12v rails that are required for the PC to function properly. This is the best way of finding out temperatures in Windows and not bad for voltages but obviously if you have access to a mulimetre this is the most exact way of testing PSU voltages on each rail.
