I'm after a free download of a program that will convert MP4 to WMV or AVI.
Downloaded a few that are either evaluation copies that do nothing or are rubbish.
Any recommendations?

Give Any Video Converter a try, looking around on the internet, it seems quite good.0

There are lots to choose from.
I recommend WinFF v1.2.
It has several 'presets'.
The three that are probably suitable for you are:-
Microsoft - WMV2 Generic
AVI - MS Compatible AVI
AVI - XviD FullScreen
