Disk drive not working on laptop

Nothing seems to happen when I insert a disk into the drive, I have tried various disks (Cds and DVDs) but nothing happens!
What could it be and is there anything I can try toget it working?
Thanks

  • It says this:

    Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

    What does this mean? I clicked on 'find a solution' but it did nothing...

    Did this, but there is still an exclamation mark by the drive, and it still doesn't work

    It went through the motions and then said that the device could not be reinstalled!! So I tried to do it myself...I followed the instructions and when I get to this part:
    1. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    2. In the right pane, click UpperFilters
    I can't find it, I have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but when I click on it there's nothing in the right pane except 'default'

    What now?

    You need to click on the + sign to the left of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, which will expand it out, then do the same to SYSTEM, etc until you've navigated to the right "folder".
  • Thanks everyone, I finally did it, now it works - I am chuffed to bits especially seen as though I am really rubbish at all this technical stuff!
