Cyprus Posting

Hi, my wife is looking for an overseas posting to Cyprus, possibly Akrotiri. Does any one know what employment opportunities exist for dependents. I would be bored sitting on the beach for 3 years!!!!

    Hi Leo,

Moving to Cyprus is not a bad thing, as i look out of the window today, its a little windy but very hot in the shade. I would guess its about 20 degrees today.

Unsure about work for yourself, but you would be able to manage on one income. Im married with 2 kids, and we have about £800 a month left to spend.

If you manage your cash well, dont want a fancy new car, dont mind eating out 2-3 times a week, you wont go wrong out here. We buy alot of things from the UK at the minute and save a fortune. Alot of UK shops / websites deliver here for free.

    Regards,

    Alias
  • Hi Alias

Thanks for that, I made up my mind and would like a Cyprus posting (beats looking out of my window and watching Brize go by on a cold morning) Money should be ok and my work will allow me to take career break.

    Thanks

    Leo

It is a hard life, though on a nice point. Sylvanas have just dropped the prices of the kebabs for Feb & March to 10 euros for full one.

A new indian has just opened, and it looks like the rainy season is over.

We work 12 hour shifts, unlike most of the station (7:30am till 1pm ishy).

    Regards,

    Alias
  • I spent quite alot of time over there posted a few years ago and the jobs for dependants wern't always easy to find. However you Family LOA will almost act as a wage in itself, when I was there it was cypriot pounds and I got about £550 a month IIRC.

Hi, we're recently back from Cyprus, although the other end of the island - and OH is Army.

As a dependant I found that opportunities for paid work were limited on the camp. This is not necessarily a reflection of your skills, but rather the fact that people like teachers, police, customs etc who also bring out dependants, and who are there for a lot longer than a normal posting, their dependants usually have the better more permanent jobs.

As I said - they're out there for a lot longer so they can step into someone elses shoes when they leave! However there are lots of different opportunities to do voluntary work. I did work for Victim Support - speak to Stella Pearson (Episkopi) - volunteers are always useful. I also fostered dogs for Sirius Dog Sanctuary - speak to Christine Barton (Education Centre).

As I said we were at the other end of the Island where there didn't seem to be so much of a british community - not that it bothered me, but language can be a problem!! In the Aki / Epi area there are a lot of expats who have organised loads of different clubs and societies so I'm sure that you'll be able to find something to keep you busy.

One thing I would say is to travel - take advantage of the proximity to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Northern Cyprus etc. If you'd like to PM me your UK address I can send you some guide books that we got - they're old, but useful for information. Rather than me go on here - if you'd like to know more - just PM me and I'm happy to chat.

Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Just be warned while Cyprus is an awesome posting (I've been a couple of times now) its awesome if you're willing to take advantage of being in the Med

But if you don't get a Job you will get BORED....I can't speak for the RAF (I'm Army) but Cyprus is one of the postings that causes ALOT of divorces.....and thats not just due to boredom!

So go with the mind set of this is an opportunity for you and the wife to get to explore places (and not just Cyprus) that you would have unlikely had done before (especially being stuck in Brize).

Oh and the water park which is a couple of miles outside of Akrotiri is AWESOME....get to the gym NOW
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • Hello

It can be hard for dependants to get jobs. There seem to be a few teaching assistant jobs at the schools and things do crop up as and when people move on. I think you have to be open minded about what you do too, it is unlikly you'll get the exact job you want to do but if you can accept it you should be fine. My Hubby is too busy to be bored. He volunteers and gets involved with things here there and everywhere. Hubby says you can find plenty to do or you can be bored and sit and do nothing.

Life is tough though, he picks me up on a Friday and we're straight to the beach for lunch and a swim. PM me if you want more info.

I don't want to put a dampener on it but just because she is looking for a Cyprus posting doesn't mean she'll get one - we've been trying for 15 years.....sorry don't want to be downbeat!!
