Playstation 1 (Oh, help, pleaase...!)

OH has been given a PS1 and is trying to set it up for our son.
I am keeping out of the way, as I don't understand anything about these game station thingies, but anyway, he's hit a hitch so to speak...

He's got it connected to the tv okay, and has put a game called 'G.Police' in.
The disc starts playing all right but then just ends after the intro. He wants to know if we need to buy a memory block to get it to work.

Can you help, please, as I am getting wound up with hearing "I don't know" shrieking from my sons bedroom.

Just pressing X when the intro is on would normally take you to the start menu, no need for the memory unless you want to save games

could be a dirty CD if it keeps on doing it after trying the above option.

OH has got it going! Thanks for the pointers, we are complete techno-phobes and didn't have a clue what to do.
