Best way to cover vent on window please.

We have recently moved into new house which has in the front room window a vent at the top which does now not close... think it used to. But thing is i can feel a constant draft from it and at the mo there is no radiator in the front room....so really feel draft.

What would be the best way to block it up please as we cannot afford a new window right now. We have air bricks in every room so air circulation will not be affected.

The vent is actually part of the window about 2 inch wide at the top in the frame and the full length of the window, so quite long.

Thanks for any help. x

If you are feeling brave......... expanding foam.
  • Hi

Do you have a back boiler?
If so, and the room does not have any other vent to outside and a door, then do not block it.

Thanks for your help....i never even thought of sticky tape :D here i was thinking of dead complicated ways.

I'm not confident with expanding foam  i can see it now lol.

So i plumped for good ole cellotape and i can definatley feel a difference, will be ok in the summer until we can get it replaced.

No there is no back boiler but thanks for your advice x

Another person who seems to think that ventilation will cure condensation. None of my rooms have any ventilation except when the window is opened. I might add that the windows are never opened, (well certainly not while the heating is on). We have no condensation of any sort, ever. The only thing that will have any effect on condensation is to keep the rooms heated and insulated. It seems to me that all you achieve by ventilation is to ensure that a good proportion of the heat you pay for is lost.
I can afford anything that I want.

Probably because the vast majority of experts recommend a combination of ventilation, heating and lifestyle change! Heating and insulation will not allow the water to escape, if you don't have any problems with condensation then you have ventilation somewhere whether you are aware of it or not.

Perhaps you might like to explain to me how a vent in the wall helps water to escape, as you put it. It seems to me that moist air is just as likely to come in through a vent, as to go out through it. I do agree with the theories about life style though. Also. I have a 9" extractor fan in the bath room. Never any condensation in there either.

You should be able to get replacement vents for your windows. Try searching for them online.

There will be small round covers of which you'll find the screws underneath to remoce them
