& the magic tablets will only cost £101!!
You'd be far better off, driving a bit more gently, make sure the tyre pressures are correct, clear the junk & excess weight from the boot, service the car regularly, use the correct engine oil, buy Shell Optimax if you're near a Shell station, fill up to the brim & run down to a 1/4tank each time (to save wasted journeys to the filling station)...& all the othe r cost free hints n tips you're about to get!!

I haven't heard of tablets but I am tempted by that stuff in bottles they sell on one of the home shopping channels, wish I could remember what one it is now
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

many, many people over on Honest John claim otherwise ---- and as it is now priced to competitively, how is it a waste of money ?
I've been using BP Ultimate Diesel for 3 tankfuls now and can confirm that FOR ME the engine was quieter and smoother, performance wise I could see no difference and that my fuel consumption increased - but it was a good experiment.
I'm going to do a protracted run on Optimax next (the cheapest real non-supermarket fuel) in my area.

(Shell have played around with petrol before, and removed it from the market because of sticking valves..)
If you look, you will be able to find as many people who notice no difference or even worse performance.
It's well marketed...which makes some people buy it. They are the ones who are paying for the marketing (Schumaker doesn't come cheap)
If you look on the Shell website, every claim says can, should help, might, may. If they were sure of the facts, they would say does..
Hi Albertross
I think that times have changed and that your pricing is now out of date.
in many areas Optimax has now gone from being the dearest to in many cases the cheapest (even cheaper than supermarket fuel in some areas).
This link shows the prices in my area.
So for me Optimax is even cheaper than supermarket diesel.
So, to conclude.
Optimax is not more expensive than regular fuel and MANY people swear by its improved performance, smoothness and economy over regular fuel.
So I don't think that it is fair to describe it as a waste of money - quite the opposite in fact.
At the very least it's worth an extended trial and see how it ACUALLY WORKS FOR YOU, rather than relying on other peoples opinion.

Optimax; at the best it would be high Octane fuel, and this would provide an advantage to engines with an ECU that can advance the ignition timing to take advantage of this. I've read a number of discussions about the actual Octane rating of Optimax, and essentially it could be quite high, but the rating drops off as the fuel ages, and Shell don't provde any guarantee on what the Octane rating is.
Then again, look on http://www.leadedpetrol.co.uk/ and find where you can buy original 4 star.
Personally I just run a random mixture of Supermarket fuel and the slightly better big name 95 RON fuels. Optimax and Ultimate are too expensive to make it worth the while for me.Happy chappy0 -

I may have misunderstood your posts and if I have please can you let me know.
I was referring to Shell Optimax DIESEL !!
As I said earlier, I have used BP Diesel Ultimate for a protracted period FOR ME the engine was quieter and smoother, performance wise I could see no difference and that my fuel consumption increased.
So It's time to try another fuel - and with Shell Optimax Diesel being the cheapest fuel in my area and many people finding that their car runs better on it, its got to be worth a try. In my case, it's cheaper and its (suposed to be) a better fuel - what have I got to lose ??
Back to the petrol question ---- it's been that long since I went to a petrol pump that I'm unclear on this, but am I not correct in thinking that Shell Optimax petrol is Shells regular grade and that Shell Optimax Plus/Extra is the Premium grade ? In which case, isn't the point whether to use Optimax or Optimax Plus/Extra ? Or is there just one Shell petrol brand, and that brand is Optimax ?
Whichever way, Albertross, you're original post would have been more accurate if you'd said "Shell Optiamx, it didn't work for me" rather than "Optimax = waste of money".
If noone comes back to me on this, I'll check my local Shell station myself.

p.s. Petrol cars ? nah, they'll never catch on

Tom & Albert
I owe you both an apology. After visiting my local Shell this morning it is now clear to me that Optimax is Shells Premium product and that it carries a Premium over regular petrol.
I don't like being wrong on things, but I don't mind admiting that I'm wrong when I am.
So for my extended trial, I'll be using Shell Diese Extra !!

p.s. Tom, not all tractors are equal, some are (a lot) faster than others.
