N.I. Number (Checkable History)

I applied for a job at WM Morrisons, and I did not get it.
On the application form they ask for your N.I. Number, and I put it on.
My work history is: (Company No.1 worked there for 20 years, left because of short time) (Company No.2 worked there for a few weeks, got dismissed because the bosses son did not like me) (Company No.3 Worked there for 22 years, took early retirement).
On the Morrisons form I only put Company No1 and Company No.3 details, I did not want to put on the form that I was sacked from Company No.2 (I thought it may go against me).
Can companys check your work history from the N.I. number, If they can they would see I was dishonest in filling in the application form concerning Company No.2.
Perhaps that was why I did not get the job.
Does anyone one have any thoughts to this.
Many Thanks

no, you cannot as a potential employer check work history from ni number
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • Its probably more to do with checking you are eligible to be employed. (Though nothing to stop an illegal immigrant using a false number on their application)

It is also easier for the Payroll Dept to set up your wages if they have all the details they need on a sheet.
  • I've only ever been asked to provide details of my employers for a max of the 5 previous years. Sounds like company 2 was too long ago to worry about?
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Probably depends on the type of work done. Except for people doing work requiring little experience and without being in a position of trust, then, for most employers, five years is very little time if they are over the age of 21.

I ask for a NI number only as it is a unique way of recording applications in my data base, that way if I get a number of repeat requests I can check back and confirm there is no variation in what is being said.

For job 2 don't state dismissed, state left. Then explain the reasons at an interview.

You probably didn't get an interview just down to bad luck, there would have been hundreds of applicants. Keep trying and don't give up.

this is the reason why the NI number is asked for, i dont think you need to put it on the form though

I'm interested, how long do you store these personal details for and are they retained with the individuals explicit consent? Do you give an undertaking that they are kept securely and no one else can access them?

All application forms are kept for 2 years and the database simply cross references it.

We are registered under the Data Protection Act and all application forms state "This application form will be kept on file for a period not exceeding two years and your information may be held on a computer system within the EU.

Thats why I don't keep "on spec" CVs sent to me. Theres too many questions.

Apparantly I maybe missing out on the best candidates (allegatons made from the unemployed cohort on the benefits board) by binning all "on spec" CVs.

I am the same, we do not accept CV's for vacancies, only our application form.
