Connecting desktop and laptop help needed

We have just bought a new desktop running on windows 7 and wish to connect it to our laptop to share documents and printers etc. I am not sure what to do. have clicked on network in my computer and clicked on the laptop when it shows up but it asks for user name and password. Problem is i know password for laptop when i turn it on but no idea what i am being asked for as all i input on laptop at startup is the password.

am I doing this wrong and if so would you be so kind as to let me know how best to connect the two.

we would even like it so one can be used so if I am on say laptop and wife is stuck on task I can help from laptop as I am disabled and sometimes stuck in bed and unable to go to desktop.

How are these connected then? Via a router? Will a hard-wired solution suffice temporarily?

So, for this you will need wireless set up and enabled. Remote assistance and remote desktop could help here? https://secure.logmein.com/US/home.aspx also perhaps.

they are connected via wireles bt internet router. desktop runs on windows 7 and laptop is Vista. so the rempte assistance will not work as is for xp.

The username is what you see when you normally log into your computer:

So "AskVG.com" is the username the case of the screenshot. Then the password is your normal password you would use to login. Those are the details you need to enter when it asks for the username and password.
