Laptop overheating-18 months after buying, do I have rights?

Hi, I bought a Toshiba laptop in August 08, and Ive been having soo much trouble with it recently. It overheats after about 10 minutes, and more an dmore of the keys keep falling off, its lucky I can type. Its soo annoying when you are doing work and it just ovrheats and turns off...I almost throw it out the window.
Just wanted to know what wold happen if I took it back to the shop PC World? Are they any good at consumer rights? I knwo under the Sale of Goods Act, it sould last at least 3 years surely?
Thanks in advance for any help!:j

You would really need to contact the customer services centre rather than go into store, who are very limited in the case of out-of-warranty items.
Firstly, you should try cleaning out the vents - dust can often prevent the heat from escaping and causing overheating (have a search on the forum for better advice for how to do this). As for keys falling off, you'd need to prove this wasn't because of misuse first.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Possibly the fan has died or is faulty, i would take it to a tech shop who do not charge £15 just to take a look, go to those who only charge you for the parts they use, or go to thye manufacturer and see what they say, i would expect a laptop to last more than 2 years.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -

Not particularly moneysaving but if you tend to use the laptop in a single place laptop coolers are very effective. We had a great dual-fan one that kept our laptop ice-cold. You can pick them up for £20-30.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
mine was doing the same in overheating, I went to PC World and bought a can of compressed air after reading about it on the internet and sprayed the air in via the vent for the fan to get rid of anything that could have been blocking the motor and its now working perfectly fine
Mine is a Toshiba as well btwAlways ask ACAS0 -
I saw on the net that some toshiba laptops have the dreaded nvidia cards in them which are notorious for overheating.
I have a HP laptop that now has a melted graphics card. Not good.
I would suggest you get a CPU temperature measurer program - loads of freeware ones around which tell you how hot the laptop is. If it is consistently high, then you have to look at new fans or even a new graphics card. I know HP give an extra year warranty for their laptops cos of this problem (but not my model number of course) ... toshiba may do the same thing?0 -
What surface is the laptop on? Don't use it on your lap or any other soft surface, a hard surface is better so air can get to the vents.0
