Can I retake 2nd year at another University AFTER a 2 year break?

Hi all,

Long story short! I was on a Business Management Hons degree course, of which, I completed first year and dropped out half way through second year. Now that I am in a better financial position, I feel the time is right to go back (main reason for quitting was because of motivation as well as financial problems).

I wanted to carry on with the course which is 3 years or 4 if you do a sandwich course, however, can I carry on from second year still? Obviously, I would have to start second year again.

Also, would I get student loans? As I have only done 2 out of the 3 years, technically?

I dropped out last year and am looking to start next year. Thats 2 academic years off, may not look good to other Uni's.

PS: In terms of grades, going all the way back to school to 1st year degree results, I have done very well.

  • You might just be okay...

The calculation is length of course + 1 year - previous study, as far as I can remember.
    So in your case 4 + 1 = 5 - 2 = 3 years funding.
So provided you start in the second year, you'd have three years funded left, and be able to complete it.

As you said, though, you might struggle getting another uni to accept you, and the UCAS period was extended this year, so if you haven't applied already, you might be too late. Equal consideration is over, and there is a lot of competition for places this year.

    Good luck!

You may well have difficulty in going straight into the second year of another university, whereas it should be far simpler if you go back to your original institution. Isn't this an option?
  • I work at a university, with the admissions tutor in my department. Every year we have students wanting to transfer to us for a variety of reasons. Many students switch majors and restart. Some take a year off then come back.

You can apply for direct entry to 2nd year. As you have been out of education for 2 years, you would be considered a mature student and may be required to go for an interview (at least in my department). You would not be judged any differently because you weren't motivated enough the first time, or had no money. You're assessed on the current information.

It's best to contact the student loans company or the uni's admissions department for funding information and advice.

    Good luck!

Thanks guys. I just had 'one of those moments' and thought I might as well act sooner than later. However, you guys are saying it may be too late to get into another Uni?

I wanted to also live out, preferably, outer London. I would rather sacrafice the funding in order to get into another Uni, I thought, already having that year behind me, along with good grades from previous courses, I would be the ideal candidate (even though my 2 year break may hinder my image a little:()

Thanks again for the swift replies. Much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Moe

As you're trying to get into the second year rather than the first, this may not be true.
If you were thinking of applying for first year it's likely you'd be too late due to the high volume of applications to university which have already been submitted. The UCAS deadline for applications to be guarnteed to be looked at by universities was 22nd January so many university places will have already been offered.
Applying to second year isn't affected by this, so as IWTBR said, you should contact the admissions tutor of the course you want to transfer to ASAP and find out a) if it's possible to transfer, b) what you need to do in order to that, and c) contact your LEA/ Student Finance England to ask for specific advice with regards to finance.
