Cards stopped working.

I've been having a problem recently in that none of my cards seem to be working at cash machines and on chip and pin systems. (Edit: May I add that I am coming to the end of the third week that I have been suffering this. To get cash/make purchases, the only method is to visit the bank and ask for some cold hard at the counter.)

Recently last year I opted for changing current accounts, but I believe the process is yet to be completed. (I think direct debits and overdraft is still on previous account).

Have spoken to both banks, neither of which seem to have a clue what is happening, but I have ordered a new card for my new current account which should arrive shortly so that I can physically test it.

Funny thing though, I have a credit card with an entirely different bank which seems to be sufferring the same problem. Not spoken to them.

Anyone have a clue what is going on? It seems very unlikely that all three of my cards chip/pin things have been damaged. (Incidentally they seem to swipe okay!). My guess is that it is a problem relating to trasferring accounts, but everytime I have spoken to the banks (yes, multiple times I may add) I get nowhere.

Could the cards be getting damp / wet somehow? For instance put them in your pocket when excercising ?

The chips are suprisingly fragile and it does take much to stop them working really.

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

But he was able to swipe it. Can you still use the card if they have been damped or wet?

  • Most ATM's use the magnetic strip - most retailers use chip and pin.
If the card is not working anywhere it is either a faulty card or the bank has blocked it or the Pin is blocked.
If the card works in atm's but not in shops it could be that the Pin has been locked and needs to be reset.

The magnetic strips have been present on cards for decades. The chips are relatively new. They are entirely separate technologies and swiping the card does not require the chip to be functional.

Water will not affect the mag stripe, I successfully used mine after a day at blizzard beach and it had been in my swimming shorts pocket all day!
