Boots january sale - was it too carefully orchestrated?

I think all their Christmas gifts were on 3 for 2 with the parcel sticker
and then all those gifts became "half price"

at a certain point they didn't want to reduce the remaining stock anymore so they shipped it off elsewhere and left a few random bits which they reduced to 75% off

it seemed carefully orchestrated, like they had planned to be selling a certain percentage on 3 for 2 and a certain percentage at half price

what do you think, did you get any bargains?

I agree. But then retail business is business!

I didn't bother buying even at 75% off, if I don't want rubbish at full price then a reduction is no inducement to waste money.

  • I saw shed loads of stuff at 75% off. That's unless they shipped all the sale stock to Southampton!

  • There was very little at our Boots at 75% off and what there was wasn't great.

I think in the "recession" they must have wanted to get the best price possible on everythin, they are by far the only company to not have as good a January sale as per last year. Topshop have only just gone to 75% off -and even then its not on everything, Lush had a grab it bag last year, this year they required you to take away more of the end of date stuff to get a deal then last year, Superdrug didn't really seem to bother much this year, Gaps sale was fair but not as good as it has been in past years, I used to be able to buy up their t-shirts for something around the £1-£2 mark, this year they were all around £4 or £5....I could go on!

I think its probably the same with most companies, if they want to stay afloat they have to try to cut their losses.

They say this year we may or may not improve out of the recession (discounting the 0.01% improvement which I still think is neglible) so who knows, it could be better next year.
  • Has anybody else noticed that most retailers' sales have been a little "skimpy" this year? The reductions aren't as generous as usual and after longer periods of time there's still lots of stuff left to be gotten rid of, but yet they haven't reduced them further! In Debenhams for example they have items reduced at 30% and 50%, but have now put those onto a "buy one get one free" offer instead of reducing the price. For a lot of people a BOGOF would be a better deal, but personally I prefer to buy something I really want and will use for a cheaper price, rather than have to buy it at a higher price and get some other thing I don't really want free with it.

The best sale is the TK Maxx final clearance, but I think those only happen once a year.

  • Christmas is a big thing for retailers and the retailer i work for starts planning in july. Over the last few years they have tried to focus the stock more and order less so there is less left after christmas.
The promotions are worked out well in advance with price labels pre printed with the half price and the gift guide printed with the reductions already showing.
The area that is more hit and miss is the extra 20% off days as they depend on how the season is going overall and how sucessful the last 20% off day was.
The worse the sales figures look the more specials take place and especially if the last special day was a success.

It was the same in my local store. They definitely didn't ship anything anywhere else. There were some great bargains to be had in my store. Lots of really good brands at 75%.

It only has to be full price for 28 days, so lots of retailers 'sell' it at full-price in only a handful of stores and can then sell it half price in all their stores after that, its a common marketing ploy :)
