So are we all supposed to give up our Plasmas, then, and go back to a Non widescreen CRT?0

No I think we are supposed to keep on using. and keep giving Gordo his extra VAT on the higher consumption, until the wind drops, and his lovely windmills stop turning, and the lights go out.
Seriously, the new generation of LED backlit TV's use less power, and many flatscreen computer monitors in the 24" ranges are down to 40 or so watts now, so TV's are going to be less greedy also, apart from plasma, which will use 400 watts + whatever we do.0 -
The "Newer" Panny PEP Plasmas still use 425w, so how much do the old one use?0

Can I just add that you can get a decent 50" plasma for less than £700, yet the cheapest 46/47" LED TV I've seen is still around the £1100 mark if you can get it on sale.
Even if the LED used no more than electricity than the 29" CRT quoted above, then that difference is almost 11 years worth of better picture qualityBy this point you would have an OLED TV or something like that.
As this is a money saving forum, my advice is to avoid the false economy of the LED TV and get a decent plasma, as they are much better value for money at sizes over 42".0 -
The Plasma vs LCD debate has raged for some years and it was certainly the case that Plasma was generally considered to have the edge for picture quality.
HOWEVER
Have things changed? Some technical reports I have read seem to think that LCD have overtaken Plasma in all respects including picture quality.
Anyone with access to WHICH will find they have addressed this issue(LCD vs Plasma) and their latest report comes out conclusively in favour of LCD; including picture quality for all screen sizes even 50 inch.
They state: "LCD TVs have the definite edge over plasmas in the rigorous Which? testing regime, and find most favour with our exacting viewing panel."
Many manufacturers have abandonded Plasma altogether - Sony, Sharp, Toshiba.
Interestingly they listed in order 33 models of all sizes as 'Best Buy' only 2 were plasma in 24th and 27th position.
So contrary to the view expressed above; if you place a modern LCD and Plasma side by side WHICH and their "exacting veiwing panel" believe that LCD gives a better picture - albeit there isn't much difference between the best of both types. In all other respects weight, power consumption etc LCD wins easily.
Anyone thinking of buying a new TV would do well to suscribe to Which.0 -

At the price Which charges for an annual subscription to received often poor or misguided surveys I would have thought anyone here would be best advised to visit a public library and pay a pound or less to photocopy the relevant pages.0 -
You could get a free trial of Which though the cashback sites at one point, it will come around again.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

You mean free as in free only for the first three months provided you first gave them your direct debit details so that they would automatically charge you for a full year unless you remembered to cancel within the first three months.
In other words Sky marketing tactics by a body supposedly there to look out for the interests of consumers.:mad:0 -
I am on the understanding that plasma TV's are expensive to run. LCD's are middle of the road and LED's cheapest and most energy efficient. However, I have also noticed in the shops that the largest 50"/60" tvs are only plasma and in fact I have seen them selling for around £1200, which I felt was not that expensive.
I have been looking for a 50"/60" tv for my business and would be interested to know if anyone has seen this size in an LCD or LED format?0
