I am a final year BSc Psychology and Neuroscience student. I would like to go on to do a PhD in the area of Social cognition/Social cognitive neuroscience.
Is it a wise move to choose a MSc that is more focused e.g. MSc Social Cognition/Cognitive Neuroscience or to apply for MSc Psychological Research Methods?
If anyone could provide me with some insight regarding this matter, I would be very grateful.

How are you hoping to fund a PhD? Research council funding? They may require an accredited research methods masters (I know the ESRC do) and so it would be worth it, but that is something you need to look in to.
Trying to get research council money could also mean you get your masters paid for you, but it does tie you to that department and supervisors for the next four or so years.
Might also be worth asking prospective departments about which one they would prefer.0 -
I would do a bit of research into the situation and see if you can skip the Masters. Not all universities have a Masters as a definite pre-requisite for a PhD (it's often just "preferred"), provided you get a 1st in your undergrad. Or you could look into a Masters that can convert into a PhD after the 1st year? I would contact the universities you are interested in doing a PhD at and see what they say.0
