When Money is found does anyone knows where it goes

Options
I have an interesting question and wonder if anyone actually knows this? Local to us they found millions, well the police I think. If they cant contact anyone about it. Or even say when they find money buried and stuff like that. When they take the money away back to the station, or where ever they take it, what happens to it there after? does it remain in a vault sitting there for all eternity? or do the government end up having it? do they give it to a charity? I am curious???

i suspect if its unclaimed and legal tender it is swallowed up by the government.

i think usually the coppers share it out to supplement their meagre salaries :money:

  • money found and handed in reverts to the finder after a month or so if unclaimed. Criminal money is destroyed. The latter i think should e used to fund the police.

Not if you're in Walsall. The thieving coppers keep it and tell you that you can't have it back.

Next time, it goes straight into the old sky-rocket.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Here (North wales) it is held for a month or so then they call the finder up and they get it.

I lost £50 and was pleasantly surprised and relieved to hear that someone had handed it in! (I had just taken it out of the cashpoint)

I was led to believe that Criminal money is used to fund operations by the police

  • I'm not entirely sure what happens with lost money but I know money seized in criminal activity is given to various funding organisation such as Cashback 4 Communities (Scotland) and I have seen other Community Cashback schemes - where community organisations/charities can apply for funding, from the money that has been seized by police. Not sure if it is the whole amount but some definetely gets given back out to communities.
