What to cook for dinner party dessert?

Hi, I'm just lloking for advice on what to cook for a dinner party which I'm posting for 6 people.

My friends are very competative, so I wat it to be fairly impressive. Also, any suggestions for entertainment would be great!! (My friend did a murder mystery party, so I have a lot to be marked against!)

Menu is...
Starter- Scallops with Black pudding and apple sauce
Main - Beef Wellington, with creamy mashed potato, green beans and carrots.

It's quite a filling and heavy meal, so not sure what to do for dessert? Main also has pastry, so dont want to use again for dessert.

And finally one guest will not eat cheese in any form, so sadly cheescake is out.

All suggestions greatly appreciate.

Thanks!

    Hi there

    Just a few suggestions
    Banofee Pie
    Tiramisu
Warm chocolate sponge/fondant and icecream (individual and melt in the middle)
    Panacotta

Try and watch come dine with me or go on the C4 website, they have recipes and some good ideas

    Hope this helps
  • I saw on come dine with me a man who did really lovely fruit jellys. He used clear tropical jelly and semi circle moulds. He put fruit at bottom then the clear jelly and added a shot of vodka. Then when they were set and turned over they looked like domes, they look soooo pretty, much more classy looking thank the colured fruit jellys.

Hi i'd recomend a dessert that can be made in advance so that it's stress free. I've done vanilla panacotta lots of times and it always goes down a treat. There are loads of recipes on the internet. Another pudding I did recently is the choc pudding from the Christmas Good Food Magazine, it's dead easy can be made in advance and looks impressive. It's on the bbcgoodfood website.:)
  • Nigella does a loverly Baileys Tiramisu. Google it and I am sure you will find it.

It is really easy to make, can be made the day before to give you more time on the day.

You could make one big one or lots of individual ones (which would look even more impressive).

It would also be quite light after your wellington and veg which will be quite a heavy meal.

I'd go for a fruit dessert (always seems less sinful! :)) Not sure how boozy your mates are, but for a really simple yummy dessert I love warm banana in rum, I make a simpler version of it, but epicurious has a good recipe

I was going to say sorbet as it is refreshing and light after a heavy main.

Lemon and orange maybe the basic ones but you can serve them in the fruit skin and if its for adults you can always mix a bit of vodka in.

i'd go for eton mess - take a lot of soft fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, break up some meringue nests, add some double cream and mix together! really simple, nice and light, but looks impressive. you could serve it in large wine glasses to add to the effect.

see here for a pic of what i mean:

Found a recipe on the back on a packet of rice flour for coconut pyramids. They're basically like meringues but with coconut mixed in. Think the recipe was:

    100g rice flour
    100g caster sugar
    100g desicated coconut
    4 egg whites

Whisk egg whites to stiff peaks, then fold in all other ingredients. Put on baking tray and in the oven until it goes brown. Very nice twist on meringue! Could serve with tropical fruits in keeping with the coconut - mango, pineapple etc. They do taste very nice!
