  • I think they might have been using the extra protection offered on some purchases made on credit cards as a sales technique.

Debit cards are just as succeptible to online fraud as credit cards - they are both just number and if it's an unsecure connection they could both go walkabouts!

My advice is tell her not to bother.

It starts with one card, then two, then three.

Next you know she will be in the Debt Free Wannabe section on here like I was. She might have savings now but so did I before the cards got their claws in.

Tell her to use her Debit Card instead online. If it is a VISA one you are pretty well protected.

And if you can't afford it don't 'ave it!

    Peace

To be honest, if someone is of the mentality that they may not handle a credit card responsibly, I say the sooner they take one out and default on it the better - lesson learned early, credit history scarred for long enough to stop them getting out a dangerous amount of credit - and done whilst young so as not to affect ones life in as greater way as if it happened later in life.

And VISA Debit cards offer NO SECTION 75 PROTECTION which is the WHOLE POINT people use credit cards. NOT because of VISA ChargeBack, but because of S.75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 ;)

I see you've made the link between credit cards and using them to buy things that you can't afford. You might use credit cards this way but a lot of people don't. I clear my Vanquis card in full each month. It is used for two purposes - purchase protection, and credit building. Not borrowing what I can't afford to pay back. Not everyone starts off life by borrowing beyond their means and I think it's pretty rude to assume the OP would be irresponsible.

OP - Start her off with a card from her bank and if they say no, I'd recommend a Capital One Classic or Aquacard. Good luck!

My sister got me a credit card with my bank (that she works at) when I was 18, after about 6 months I applied for a 0% on purchases deal and got accepted, then got some cashback cards with 0% on purchases. I've never paid interest.
I am much better off for it and I never buy what I can't afford. People should take responsibility for their money, it's not getting a credit card that gets you in to debt, it's using it irresponsibly.
