Impending Internet Charge

I have just been reading an artical about the proposed internet charge if Labour get re elected and it is payable even if you have no internet connected and is payable on each availability of a connection. Surely this would be unfair. For example we have our line supplied by BT but there is an old Telewest connection coming into the house from when we moved in with a box which we have never moved nor wanted. In fact I had to argue with them to disconnect the line as they wanted me to take the account on from the old home owners. Do we now contact them and demand they come and remove all wiring and the box so as to avoid being charged for a service we don't want or use?
I'd be interested in hearing anyone elses take as there must be other people in this position probably with other potential connnections as welll. I believe the yearly charge is suggested as £8 so would soon mount up

Don`t worry too much because there`s more chance of the man in the moon being elected than worn out nu labour.
The idea is that every household in the country coughs up about a fiver a year so that other bunch of rogues BT can get super fast broadband up and running by 2017.
Is this a third world country you`ve got to ask yourself.0 -

Surely this would be unfair.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

You could well be right, however the alternative doesn't encourage me greatly.:D
Absolutely agree, one`s as bad as t`other but we usually put up with their antics, broken promises, and sleaze for so long then kick them out, hoping the next lot might do better.
Some hope.
We had the Tories for 17 years, this gang for 13,now it`s the Tories turn again.
Oppositions don`t win elections,government lose them.:eek:0 -
Going back to the OPs point: As far as I'm aware the old TeleWest "connection" wouldn't give rise to a charge because the 50p/month would be only levied on live phone lines as a surcharge on the rental portion. There will be lots of houses in the large city areas who have an old BT junction box not now used cos the householder has gone with Virgin and vice versa.0

I think you will find that it will be based on 'active lines'. It will simply be added to your monthly line rental and collected by the telecoms companies, it's not going to apply to old connections, whether physically present or not. And I think it will apply to ADSL lines only, not to VM cable lines. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I believe it applies to any active fixed line whether it has broadband or not.0
