Can I return windscreen wipers to Halfords?

I took them back today; they wouldn't give me a refund as its longer than their 28 day company policy, so after briefly attempting to disagree with this they gave me a new set. Which I don't really want as I've already bought some better, cheaper ones but that's not really a valid reason to reject them! They did say though that if these ones were as bad I could have a refund no problem.
Seems fair enough but I'm vaguely wondering if I was entitled to a refund.

get a pair of pliers (wrap a rag around the flat part of the wiper arm,to save damaging the black paint coating and causing rust) then grap it with your pliers and twist the arm a little bit,depending on which way it judders will depend on which way you twist it.

This did help quite a bit actually, didn't even need pliers just bent it a bit by hand. I probably bent the arms when fighting with them to replace the blades originally.
