'Waitrose Deliver' v Ocado

Hi

According to their respective websites I can get both or either delivered to my address/postcode.

Their websites appear to be completely separate....

What is the difference ? I always thought that Ocado was Waitrose ????

Am I being dim ?

nope your not being dim, i was under the assumption as well, i thought waitrose was the physical form of shopping and ocado was the internet shopping business of waitrose,

just checked the web and it turns out they are 2 separate businesses but they are both part of the john lewis group, found it on wikipedia, ocado uses its own warehouse for storing the food etc which is why ocado dont cover alot of the country

Ocado is only partly owned by JLP, I believe.
I use both. The main advantage to Waitrose deliver is that they charge a big fat £0 to deliver, as long as you spend over £50. Ocado can cost up to £6 for the delivery BUT they do one hour time slots (as opposed to 2 hour slots on Waitrose deliver). The other main difference is that Waitrose Deliver literally deliver from your "local" Waitrose (which may not in fact be the one closest to you) which means you can only buy things that that branch sells. Whereas Ocado do it all centrally and sell everything. On the positive side for Waitrose Deliver, the local branch thing means you might get stuff (like specific fresh fish) that you won't get through Ocado. Sometimes the prices may vary by pence, too. Both sites are excellent, though, so it's easy enough to put your shopping list into both and compare.

Ocado is partly owned by JLP's pension fund, not JLP itself. However the company is reportedly considering a flotation.

The delivery charge varies according the time and day of the week. Late evenings early in the week are best - sometimes free.

My OH works for Waitrose and the difference is quiet big:

Waitrose Deliver shopping is picked from the store stock and delivered by the store staff, you will be able to choose all of the items stocked by the store including items from the fresh counters, and should you have a problem or error / damage on the delivery they do seem to put it right quicker. Basically someone else is doing your normal Waitrose shop for free.

Ocado is NOT part of Waitrose (it does have JLP Pension fund investment that is the only link) however they do by Waitrose branded goods, they deliver from central warehouse and should you get damaged shopping they will not redeliver, but they do refund it! You cannot get much loose food & most items are prepacks, the prices are alledged to be lower but they charge for delivery at all but the oddest times!

Ocado price match Tesco on branded products and offer 'internet only prices' (sometimes only a penny cheaper - sometimes more) on a good number of waitrose brand goods - so should work out cheaper than Waitrose Deliver on the items you buy.

Having been a big Tesco devotee in the past, I have used Ocado 4 times now. Wow!
No items missing, very friendly delivery staff, not one problem with the items delivered in terms of freshness, even phoned to ask if they could come 20 minutes early, free whisky and strawberries and £3.99 delivery.
Tesco match price.
What more could I want?

I assume you have used both Waitrose Deliver and Ocado services then, to produce an unbiased opinion?

Waitrose Deliver services more parts of the country than Ocado, as all items are hand picked in-store, whereas Ocado has a (very efficient - see here!) central processing unit which processes orders for the whole country, and the relevant vans/loads are despatched from there - in Hatfield.

Ocado and Waitrose Deliver have very similar prices, yet once Ocado were famously known to undercut Waitrose on their own branded items.

Other than this, not much can be said in terms of difference between the two - Waitrose Deliver normally use liveried Mercedes sprinter LWB chilled vans, whereas Ocado use SWB Mercedes Sprinters with custom chilled boxes on the back, normally in a Silver colour.

I have had experience of both. Waitrose deliver delivery is always free. They also offer a collect from shop (which I have experienced once but never again, could've gone round meself shopping in the time it took, and rooting around for substitutions they had made!). Our local branch of Waitrose is pretty small, so there is not much choice as waitrose deliver comes from there. (-Although the bags they delivery with are very large and extremely useful for recyling as small bin liners/ litter trays etc !)

Minimum order value at ocado is £40 whereas waitrose deliver is £50. Ocado win on freshness/ minimum substitutions, more choice and definitely much more user friendly website. Waitrose deliver is extremely frustrating and takes forever to find what you want, plus you need to know how many grams of veg you need, that type of thing!

If you are catering for a large party waitrose deliver offer free glass hire/ fish kettle hire, plus their entertaining range and homeshop ranges so could potentially be more useful for functions.

So all in all I personally prefer ocado, but at busy times when slots are unavailable at ocado, or I'm loathed to pay for an overpriced delivery slot, waitrose deliver can be useful.

If you want food picked from the shelves the same as sainsburys, tesco etc then have waitrose deliver.
If you want food direct from a warehouse, with use by dates on your receipt, a guide to average and minimum use by dates shown against the items on the website and a good indication about stock availability then choose Ocado.
I think at the moment Ocado have an exclusive within the M25, don't know what will happen when the current contract is up.
