This is going to sound really mad ..but I can't grow lettuce. I have tried for 2 summers and the horrible things go all limp, faint and die. How do you grow lettuce ? Where and what in ? I honestly tried loads of them, in pots and in the garden !
Grow in pots, cover with fine mesh to prevent insect invasion. Check on water. Grow in part sun/part shade.0 -
Not a lot to add to the wisdom here as I am hopless at growing veg..but last year had HUGE sucess with allsorts of lettuce - I put all of my largets pots into old watreproof buckets with a wick between the pot and bucket. I used a thick strip of wool lining left over from pond making but I guess most absorbant fabrics would work - tied a knot in the top to stop it from dropping through the hole
filled it with compost watered it - the bucket resevoirs kept them lovely and moist with rainwater without the usual drying out and ...and being in cleaned tubs at the back of the patio meant no slugs ! we ate lettuce with everythiing all summer - I had expected damping off or rotting to be a problem - but not at all - I was really pleased with myself even if it did look a bit grotty with old chicken manure buckets...Fight Back - Be Happy0
