Leaving IS for a temporary job

Can anyone advise if you come off IS and get a job (temporary contract) when the temporary contact ends if you do not manage to get another job straight away can you return to IS until you find a new job (temporary or permanent).

I have heard IS is no longer available for couples so if you have it and then work then the job ends you will not qualify again. Is ESA the same thing as IS by another name?

Many thanks - hope enough detail provided

ESA replaced IS/IB for those who are sick/disabled. There are 2 components - the income based replace IS and the contributions based replaced IB.

ESA is for people who cannot work due to illness/disability it has replaced IS on the grounds of Incapacity for new claims.
  • Thanks for answers :)- so when the temporary job ends it would be JSA if enough contributions have been paid to qualify and if not enough contirbutions have been paid would there be anything else instead until a new job is found?

    Many thanks again:)

You can claim income based JSA if you (and your partner) meet the threshold and you don't have enough NI contributions.

If you are currently claiming IS/IB on the grounds of sickness it's likely the new claim will link and you will go back to those benefits.

But if you're fit for work now, why would you not be just because a temporary job ends?
