New Doors - Advice Please!

We need to replace both front and back doors. I don't like the look of white uPVC but I'd be OK with this at the back - the present door is aluminium so anything would be an improvement! The front door has two side panels and a top panel, the whole space about 3m high x 2m wide. I like the look of the coloured composite doors for the front but I'm worried that replacing the doors and panels will be way out of our budget. Would we be better getting quotes from the big nationals or going for local companies? And if anyone has had similar work done, could they give us an idea of the price?

It really depends on what you can afford. Without out know your limit this will be difficult.
(1) Old style wooden doors are the cheapest. Can range as little as £100-£200.
(2) UPVC - you could easily get both doors done for as little as £300-£600. Obviously, the cheaper you go, the worse design and quality associated with it.
(3) Composite doors are the best. This can start from one door being £700-£1200 and above.
Now - no. 3 does not usually count with labour costs.
I would always suggest using your local companies. Always get 3 quotes as minimum. You can then get a better feel and even lower the price. You will also need to see what designs you want. I believe not all uPVC doors have to be white. Just be weary of discolouration of uPVC doors over time due to the sun. The become yellow in colour after 6-8 years exposure. But by then, you want to change them anyway.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

Hi,
I wanted to replace three picture windows with white upvc french doors. local double glazing companies charged around £2K each.
However, my builder suggested using a local joiner and he handmade me three wood frames with glazing for £1,100 each, including fitting and glass.
They look fab and I would never have thought I could afford word so it might be worth finding a local small joinery firm or one-man band. The only downside was I had to wait 6 weeks but it was worth it to save the money and have fab windows.0
