I have heard this can be done

I have heard that instead of transfering balance to a new card it is possible to call up existing company and see if they will reduce the interest rate.

Am I right in saying this?

    Nothing to lose by asking

Though its probably better to transfer away, and then call them up and ask if they are going to offer anything before you close the card down.

In my experience, if you pay up and don't use the card at all, the Bank themselves get in touch with you with a lower interest rate offer - has happened twice in my case, where they came back with a 1.9% BT offer - of course I gladly accepted ;D
