Hi Techies!

I was hoping that someone could give me an opinion on Acer laptops. The reviews I have read are very mixed.

I was wondering if anyone has the Acer 5810TZG? I have chosen that latop as it is lightweight and the battery lasts for up to 8 hours.

TIA :)

Personally, I dislike Acer; the build quality on their notebooks and their netbooks is quite atrocious IMO. Others here have said good things about Acer in the past, but their products are not for me. ;)
  • Ive Never had any problems With Acer, We've got two acers.
I got the Acer Aspire 8930G and My sisters got the Acer Aspire 7735Z.

Not had any problems at all with them, they are easy to use , light, perfect for everything we need to use them for. Ive found the screens are very clear and i watch Hd/blu-ray movies on them and they are perfect.

I like my Acer , its got a media panel on the end of the keyboard, and it has a full keyboard.

What do you want to use the computer for? It should be ok for some general web browsing, e-mail, and word-processing, but it might be a little slow for anything else. Obviously the battery life is very good, but I wouldn't describe it as lightweight - many other 15" laptops are available at that weight and they have normal CPUs that run at twice the speed!
  • I think the Acer is probably ok - may not last as long as other machines though and you may be able to get something better value

    I bought an Acer

their spec is good is good but its true you do take a bit of a chance with the build quality...but I am of the opinion that if it last 2 years ,there will be summink newer and shinier that I want anyway....

ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choice!

next time i dont thik i will go ACER but i have had two...just because they dont offer customer service and they always seem to have one problem or the other...google your model followed by the "complaints" and you may see a problem, you may not..its all a bit hit and miss with ACER i am afraid

    but...they are cheap!

currently i am over the moon with my sub £400 acer 5536 cos some guy(oops it TENTONINE-hes an absolute star) in the techie forum suggested flashing the bios and it made the in built webcam work again...but its only a couple of months old, i shouldnt have to do that and after reading other peoples horror stories i didnt want to send it back

    hope that helps...

    Hi

I need it for some uni work, work work (using microsoft thingies) browsing, mailing, watching movies etc ... not a gamer.

It was very light and sleek when I saw it at PC World. Are the better CPU laptops able to match the battery life??

    Thank you

I was really only referring to the weight (which is listed as 2.4Kg) rather than the battery life. Many 15" laptops weigh roughly this much. Although you could get a computer with 8 hours of battery life and a faster CPU, I doubt that you can find one in this price range; if you do, it might be heavier due to a larger battery (although more expensive laptops can offset the heavier battery with lighter materials used in general construction).

You will probably find that it runs everything fine for the kind of general use that you describe, but it may well seem out of date very quickly compared to a faster laptop. You probably won't really notice that though if you don't upgrade to new versions of Windows when they come out.

Will you use it on battery often? If not, have you considered just getting a second battery for some other laptop? This can obviously be a bit inconvenient if you really need 8 hours of battery life on a regular basis though.

I'm a fan of Acer - I have 2x Acer laptops and an Acer deskside and my own expereince with tham has always been good. They used to be "cheap & cheerful", priced well below "quality" brands, but the price differential has narrowed in recent times
