Removing Sticky stuff left from border

I have just removed a paper border from one of the bedrooms before painting. I soaked the border a bit before removing so it would not damage the paper underneath that I am am leaving.
This has left sticky stuff on the wall, whats the best way to remove this without damaging the paper?
Hot soapy water dosnt shift it and turps removes the paint from the wall bit only a small bit of the sticky stuff.

  • If you used a border adhesive then you may have a problem.
It's murder to remove,I tried evreything including WD40 and some heavy duty wipes made for removing silicone/glues but I ended up having to strip the walls and start again in the end.
Hope you find something though as I'd be interested to know.

MrsTittleMouse, the bedrooms were papered like that before I moved in a few years ago .

I have also read that fabric softner work?

Looks like im gonna be buying a load of random cleaning stuff to try.

The problem is when using wet stuff it just moves around, I wonder if giving it a quick blast with a hot air gun would help?
  • We had to do this all through our hall, stairs, landing and downstairs loo - nightmare! We'll also have to do it in another room soon. And yes, it was put on with the dreaded border adhesive.

From what I remember, we scrubbed and scrubbed to remove the residue. Can't recall what we used, although it may have been Jif/Cif. We then sanded the area to make sure that we removed every trace, and followed that up with a couple of coats of good quality primer/undercoat. After all that, we did end up with a nice, clean surface over which to paint.

Good luck! And please let us know if you come up any new tips on how best to do it.
