New Family Car!

We're needing new, but used family car. It needs to be safe and relatively cheap on tax, insurance and fuel. The husband doesn't want something slow, although that doesn't bother me so much.

Any ideas what we should be looking at? We've probably got about £2-3000 to spend.

Thanks in advance! :)
Sarah. :p

A bit small for a family car?

I would have thought a Ford Focus would have been a good bet in this price range.

Mmm yes, how big are you looking for?
Family car generally says to me Mondeo / Vectra size.

Under £3000 there are 02, 52, 03 and 53 plate Mazda 6 2.0TS around, most high mileage (100K+) but look hard and there are some under 80,000 miles. Avoid the diesel at this age, not that economical, higher servicing costs and more prone to problems. 0-60 in 10 seconds and somewhere in the range 31-37mpg depending on how much town driving you do.

Skoda Octavia also around at similar age / price, not as big as the Mazda and not as intersting either, but it's worthy of the job.
