Replacing gas fire.Advice please

When we moved here there was a very nice fireplace complete with gas fire in our living room.
Sadly the gas fire is'nt very efficient and I'd like to replace it,but not the fireplace.
What I'm wondering is will this involve a lot of mess, since my husband does'nt want any hassle.
Just how easy is it,or not (obviously not doing it myself) to just replace a gas fire.
Would they be able to use the existing pipework and do all fires fit existing spaces,or do you have to be wary of the size at the back.
I don't have clue what the measurements of the back of the fireplace is and don't want to have to pull it out to measure to be left with a gaping hole before I get a new one.
Sorry if I sound vague but I just don't have a clue.:(
Any advice.
Thanks.

Hello you would be best to get a Gas safe installer in before you buy anything, he will tell you whats best for your fireplace , and tell you what sort of fire is suitable for your fireplace ,as there are certain rules and regulations that he as to go by air vents, chimney, chimney liners, etc.

If I were you I definately wouldnt go pulling the original fire out to see about the measurements because there will definately be a gas pipe there connected to the old fire, you dont want to cause a gas leak.

Speak to the gas safe man he will advise you , im sure you be able to find a nice gas fire and he will fit it for you and give you a gas safe Certificate .
